The memorandum of understanding is aimed at exploring how Cyprus gas could be processed, transported and exported through Egypt, strengthening the country’s role as a potential energy hub for the Eastern Mediterranean.

QatarEnergy said the agreement would support deeper integration between Egypt and Cyprus in the natural gas sector while making better use of existing infrastructure.

Egypt’s LNG plants in focus

Egypt has long positioned itself as a regional gas platform because of its liquefaction plants, which can convert natural gas into liquefied natural gas for export.

However, those facilities have often been underused, despite Egypt’s strategic location and its connections to both domestic and international markets.

The new agreement could help increase utilisation of Egypt’s LNG infrastructure while supporting wider energy cooperation across the Eastern Mediterranean.

Regional energy cooperation

QatarEnergy CEO Saad al-Kaabi, who also serves as Qatar’s minister of state for energy, said the deal represents a step toward advancing energy cooperation in the region.

The agreement comes at a sensitive time for global energy markets, with geopolitical tensions affecting shipping routes, supply security and LNG flows.

For Egypt, the partnership could strengthen its position as a regional gas hub. For QatarEnergy and ExxonMobil, it offers a potential pathway to bring Cyprus gas discoveries to market using infrastructure that is already in place.
