Egypt plans global grain trading and storage hub
Egypt is aiming to establish itself as a global hub for grain trading, storage and processing, as the country seeks to strengthen food security and expand its role in regional commodity markets.

Supply Minister Sherif Farouk announced the plan on Friday while speaking at a grains event in the Russian city of Sochi.
Egypt, one of the world’s largest wheat importers and the biggest buyer of Russian wheat, wants to build a modern grain infrastructure network serving the Middle East, Africa and other regions.
Modern storage and trading infrastructure
Farouk said Egypt is pursuing an ambitious strategy to transform the country into a centre for the storage, processing and trading of grain crops.
“In this context, Egypt now wants to establish a global hub for grains,” he said.
The project is expected to include modern grain elevators, transport systems, processing facilities and expanded storage capacity.
Stronger cooperation with Russia
Farouk said Egyptian and Russian commodity exchanges could cooperate on modernising Egypt’s grain trading infrastructure.
That cooperation could include developing pricing benchmarks, improving supply chain transparency and strengthening grain tracking systems.
“Egypt will continue to strengthen its relationship with Russia in developing grain tracking systems,” Farouk said.
He added that these efforts would help Egypt improve transparency and resilience in the strategic commodity market.
Food security and regional role
The plan reflects Egypt’s broader effort to secure reliable grain supplies while positioning itself as a regional commodity platform.
If implemented, the hub could help Egypt manage imports more efficiently, support processing industries and play a larger role in grain distribution across nearby markets.
